Punch List
A final checklist of incomplete or defective work items that need to be addressed before a construction project can be considered complete.
What is a Punch List?
A punch list (also called a deficiency list or snag list) is a compilation of work items that remain incomplete or need correction before a construction project can be considered finished.
It's created during the final inspection phase and serves as the roadmap for completing all remaining tasks to the client's satisfaction.
When It's Created
Punch lists are typically developed during the substantial completion phase, when the project is nearly finished but before final payment and project handover.
Common Punch List Items
Touch-up Work: Paint touch-ups, caulking, or minor repairs.
Missing Items: Hardware, fixtures, or accessories not yet installed.
Quality Issues: Work that doesn't meet specifications or standards.
Cleanup: Final cleaning, debris removal, or site restoration.
Documentation: Missing warranties, manuals, or certificates.
The Punch List Process
1. Joint Inspection
Contractor and client walk through the project together identifying remaining items.
2. Document Issues
Create detailed list with descriptions, locations, and photos of each item.
3. Prioritize Items
Separate critical items from minor cosmetic issues.
4. Complete Work
Address all punch list items within agreed timeframe.
5. Final Approval
Client signs off that all work is complete and satisfactory.
Best Practices
Be Thorough: Better to include items that might not be needed than miss important issues.
Use Photos: Document each item with clear photos showing the problem.
Set Deadlines: Establish timeline for completing punch list items.
Stay Organized: Track completion status of each item systematically.
Communicate: Keep client updated on progress addressing items.
