Dave vs Buildxact
Buildxact connects residential plans, material takeoffs, supplier pricing, and job costs. Dave fits small project crews that already measure their work and want estimates, client options, schedules, and invoices together.
How the workflows differ
A practical look at where each product fits, and what small project-based crews should consider before choosing their contractor software.
Drawing-led estimating or site-led quoting
Buildxact is worth comparing when plans and material quantities drive the bid. Dave fits a measured site scope that needs to become a customer-ready estimate and a manageable project.
Cost control can justify a broader system
Buildxact documents estimated-versus-actual cost tracking and purchasing workflows. If those controls are central to how you run builds, test them directly rather than choosing on the quote screen alone.
Check the AI tools in the selected tier
Buildxact separates its AI assistants and job-management tools across plans and add-ons. Dave includes AI estimate drafting and its project tools in its base plan, but does not offer the same drawing-takeoff workflow.

Dave vs Buildxact: for small crews
When Buildxact fits better
Buildxact is a useful candidate for a residential builder whose estimate begins with a plan set and continues into purchasing and job-cost review. Its takeoff workflow links measured quantities to estimating, while cost tracking compares the estimate with actual spending.
Bring your supplier process to the demonstration. Check the products and dealer data available for your market, how you handle a price change, and which people need access. A vendor connection is useful only if it matches how your business purchases materials.
When Dave fits better
Dave is worth trying when a small crew measures on site and the slow part is turning that information into quotes, customer choices, schedules, and invoices. A saved Pricebook and reusable templates help avoid re-entering familiar work.
For a deck or fence contractor, the important comparison may be how clearly each system handles an optional finish, a changed gate, and the accepted invoice. If you need automated plan measurement or detailed purchase-order cost controls, evaluate those requirements separately.
Example: price a small deck from the same inputs
Use a hypothetical 12-by-16-foot deck, or 192 square feet of plan area, as a trial. Supply the actual layout, framing design, material selections, stairs, railing, access, and supplier quotes. The area by itself is not a complete takeoff.
In Buildxact, test the measurement-to-estimate process and how purchasing feeds cost review. In Dave, supply checked quantities and test the quote, optional upgrades, approval, and invoice. Ask both tools to revise the railing scope and show what changed. This is a suggested exercise, not a product benchmark.
Before switching
Confirm the cost of the AI functions you intend to use, not just whether the vendor offers AI. Then test one completed job, one revision, and the records you need to export.
Dave can recreate existing estimates from supported files, but spreadsheet formulas and formatting do not transfer. We have not verified a native Buildxact-to-Dave migration or live sync. Keep original records and reconcile imported totals before sending customer documents.
